Foundational skills for Grade 6 Math.
In grade 6, students continue to build upon the math skills they learned in previous grades, while also being introduced to more advanced concepts. Here are some of the foundational Common Core math skills that students in grade 6 are expected to master:
- Understand and use ratios and rates to solve problems.
- Understand and use division of fractions and extend the notion of number to the system of rational numbers.
- Use properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions and solve problems.
- Understand and use concepts of mean, median, mode, and range to analyze data.
- Solve problems involving area, surface area, and volume.
- Understand and use concepts of positive and negative numbers, and use them to solve problems.
- Graph points on the coordinate plane to solve real-world and mathematical problems.
- Understand and use the Pythagorean theorem to find the distance between two points in a coordinate system.
- Write, evaluate, and simplify expressions involving exponents.
- Use statistical methods to analyze data, including using measures of center and variability.
These foundational math skills are important for building a strong mathematical foundation and preparing students for the more complex math concepts they will encounter in later grades
