Foundation Skills for Grade 1 Math
The foundational skills for grade 1 math include:
- Number recognition and counting: Students should be able to recognize and count numbers from 1 to 120 and understand the concept of “one more” and “one less” when counting.
- Basic addition and subtraction: Students should understand the concepts of addition and subtraction and be able to solve basic addition and subtraction problems with numbers up to 20.
- Basic shapes and measurements: Students should be able to recognize and name basic geometric shapes such as circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles and understand basic concepts of measurement such as length, weight, and capacity.
- Patterns and sorting: Students should understand the concept of patterns and be able to identify and extend simple patterns. They should also be able to sort objects based on different attributes, such as color, shape, and size.
- Time: Students should understand the concept of time and be able to tell time to the hour and half-hour on an analog clock.
- Money: Students should understand the concept of money and be able to identify and count coins and bills up to $1.
- Basic graphing: Students should be able to create and interpret simple picture and bar graphs.
- Problem-solving: Students should be able to use basic mathematical concepts and skills to solve simple word problems.
